Story Book Parade 2013

Faculty and students at South Hills Elementary School dressed as their favorite storybook character and hit the sidewalk for the annual Storybook Parade. Teachers and students walked the parade route near the school in costume carrying the storybook of choice. Please enjoy the slideshow put together by our very own Ms. Williams, our school librarian.

Tarrant County Back 2 School Roundup Aug. 7 2013

School Supplies

School supplies will be provided to eligible students in grades pre-K through 12th attending school in Tarrant County. Backpacks will also be provided to children grades pre-K through 5th grade.

Event Details: Services and Activities

• Free school supplies will be given to approximately 10,000 students in pre-K through 12th grade

• Backpacks will also be provided to children grades pre-K through 5th grade

• Free haircuts for school children

• Free dental screenings, fluoride applications, free toothbrushes and toothpaste for students

• Free immunizations for schoolchildren

• Free health screenings and services for both schoolchildren and their families

• Kids activities, games and interactive demonstrations and booths

• Community resource booths will offer information on such topics as literacy, parenting, nutrition, financial literacy, fire safety, and social services

Who Qualifies?

Recipients of free school supplies must be public school children (ages 4-18) who reside in Tarrant County, and whose families meet the 2013 Federal Poverty Income Guidelines.

NOTICE! IMPORTANT CHANGE

State of Texas Tax Free Weekend/SalesTax Holiday

The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of  this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9-11, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. This is especially important for PTAs that take advantage of this weekend to sell school supplies, spirit wear, and other items within the exempt parameters.  This way a PTA does not have to declare one of their two (2) tax-free days.  If your PTA is using this weekend be sure to coordinate with your vendors to make sure they are aware of the change. www.txpta.org

Festival provides free eye exams and glasses to children ages 5 to 12 who qualify, plus free vision screenings, educational activities, entertainment, games, giveaways and more!

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

In an effort to eliminate poor vision and its lifelong consequences, The Alcon Foundation, Essilor Vision Foundation and the Kids Vision for Life – Tarrant County Coalition will host Kids Vision Fest 2013 on Friday, February 1, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., at Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus located at 300 Trinity Campus Circle (formerly 300 RadioShack Circle) in Fort Worth. Free and open to the public, the event will offer free vision screenings to all children. However, free eye exams and glasses will be provided ONLY to children ages 5 – 12 who qualify based on the 2012 Federal Poverty Guidelines.

IMPORTANT: Students who bring vision referrals from school nurses will be given priority on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Parking available in nearby lots. Public transportation is also nearby.

What: Family Literacy Night / Book Fair
Where: South Hills Elementary
Book fair dates: Monday 12/03/12 to Friday 12/07/12 Hours are 7:30 am-3:30 pm
The fair will be open during lunch and after school in the school library.
Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Thursday extended shopping hours for Literacy Night: 7:30 am-7:30 pm

PTA will be raffling a $25 gift certificate for the book fair to one lucky winner!

There will be so many fun games and activities:
Hot cocoa and cookies in the cafeteria

Reader's Theater
Book Walk
Bingo Games
