The cleanup will involve litter pickup, weed removal and pruning. If you have your own gardening tools, gloves, etc. please bring them!

Traditionally we have had a very low turnout for this activity so please try your very best to come out and help. You will enjoy working with other parents and you will be surprised how your children will enjoy helping too!

Holiday Clothing Closet

Reminder for those who have already registered:

Students, and families of students, who attend Fort Worth ISD’s South Hills Elementary School will enjoy the generosity of the season on Saturday, December 10, 2011.
This will be the second year for the school’s Holiday Clothing Closet. Under the direction of Counselor Casey Gutierrez, generous sponsors have made it possible for families in need to have an enjoyable holiday.

McKinney Memorial Bible Church, an Adopt-A-School partner, the Salvation Army, Travis Avenue Baptist Church and EECU have all joined resources to fill the Holiday Clothing Closet with needed gifts and supplies.

“About 130 families will be served by this effort, including 355 of our students,” said Principal Priscila Dilley. “We are thrilled about this opportunity to assist our community and our students during this holiday season."

Each family will receive clothing, school uniforms, a toy from the wish list and a basket of food.

The Holiday Clothing Closet will be open for South Hills students and their families between 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. at 3009 Bilglade.

The Book Fair and Beyond!

The fall Book Fair is this week from December 5th through the 12th. Hours are from 7:30am - 3:30pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The fair will be open during lunch and after school in the Library. There will be a special evening event for parent holiday shopping before and after the PTA Meeting Dec. 12th from 6pm to 7:30pm.

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS!!
We need library volunteers to help with the book fair for after school this week and all day Dec.12th!! Any amount of time is extremely helpful!

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life.

South Hills Elementary PTA Fall Fundraiser

Why should I SELL chocolate???
Why should I BUY chocolate???

Quite simply, we need your help to make our school even better for our students. Over the past few months we have used your PTA funds to purchase brand-new books for ALL our students through the Reading is Fundamental Program. (Almost $1,500) Another $500 goes toward the PTA’s mandatory liability insurance. A generous $775 donation to your PTA immediately went right back to students. It was used to bring the Noble Planetarium’s “Astronomy on Wheels” program to the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.

This might sound strange to you—But we’re proud to say the treasury is running low. It means our PTA is doing its job. We’re bringing in funds that immediately go back into our school. Your help with the upcoming fundraiser ensures we’ll continue to meet our goals. For the spring semester, we would like to accomplish four primary things…

1. Refurbish the marquee (sign). It’s currently in such bad shape that it can’t be used to post important announcements. The estimated cost for repairs is $2,200.

2. Pay for the Fort Worth Zoo to present a program at our school for the pre-K through 2nd grades. Estimated cost: $400.

3. Build up the fund for next year’s Reading is Fundamental book purchase.

4. Secure funds for general operations of the PTA. This includes purchasing the screening licenses for movie night, paper/supplies…things of this nature.

With your help we can make this happen. You’ll be receiving information soon about a chocolate-bar fundraiser. The bars will cost $2 each, and will include a valuable coupon for a nearby restaurant. We will be recruiting families to sell chocolate. And, of course, we’re grateful for all purchases made.

We know your time is valuable—which is why this fundraiser will be swift. The program will be launched and wrapped up in a two- to three-week period. If this program is successful, we will NOT be having any other major fundraising campaigns for the remainder of the school year. Instead, we can devote all our time to bringing more innovative ideas and programs to the South Hills Wildcats.

On October 6, 2011, more than 2 million voices will call for an end to America's early education achievement gap by reading Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney – setting a world record in the process!

All Pre-K and Kindergarten students will have the book, Llama Llama Red Pajama read to them by volunteer readers. We are inviting your children (prek/kinder only)to come to school in their pajamas for this fun activity. Who Can Participate: Students in Grades 1st through 5th

Here's How It Works: Students write an essay, poem, or thank-you letter (500 words or less, in English on 8.5" x 11" white paper) sharing how a teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire them. Each entry should be submitted with the entry form and a parent or legal guardian must sign the entry form acknowledging that they have read the Official Contest Rules.

What Students Get: The students who author the winning essays, poems, or thank-you letters will receive a certificate of recognition and be honored at their local store during a ceremony for the winning teachers from their schools.

What Teachers Get: The winning teachers will be recognized at a special event at their local Barnes & Noble store and will receive a special award acknowledging their achievement, together with a selection of Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classics series (for high school teachers) or a set of five (5) Classic Starts® series (for grades 1-5 and grades 6-8 teachers). The six regional winners will each receive a NOOK™ eBook Reader and a $500 Barnes & Noble Gift Card. Be aware of redistricting plans

Your PTA president and parliamentarian attended tonight's meeting hosted by FWISD regarding the latest proposed redistricting plan.

To learn more about the proposed nine single-member districts, click here.

Be aware that South Hills Elementary falls within the newly formed District 8. (Click here for the map. It's in hot pink.) Our most current knowledge is that an election will be held in May 2012 to name a new board trustee for this district.

As the election date approaches, please be sure to familiarize yourself with the candidates. We'll keep you informed as things progress. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns, please e-mail southhillspta@gmail.com.

Last year, the Mexican American College Education Fund awarded $30,000 to FWISD students! This award is not a one-time gift. The student receives funding throughout their college experience. Last year the majority of recipients were freshmen. Our school is in the process of raising money for this great fund. Anyone can apply for it, and several FWISD teachers received this award as students. Together we can make college a priority for all children. A donation jar can be found in the office. It will also be passed around at our next PTA meeting on April 18. Or see Neely York at the school for more details.

Pass along this message to everyone in your community who cares about Texas students!

It's the biggest crisis in Texas history. Nearly five million Texas students need our help. Texas PTA is proclaiming Wednesday, March 2, as "Fund Texas' Future Day." It's imperative we make sure our "house is in order" - the Texas House of Representatives in Austin, that is. Please light up cyberspace by emailing your state representative on Wednesday, March 2.

Please personalize your message, but here are some important points to include in your email to your state representative:

1. Texas PTA's legislative position is that funding public education is a priority.

2. Regardless of what your campaign promises might have been, there are nearly five million reasons for you to look at all sources of funding to protect public education.

3. Cutting funding to public education is not acceptable.

4. The Rainy Day Fund and all revenue sources should be considered to fund Texas's future.

5. Texas children are our future.

6. Texas businesses cannot thrive without an educated workforce. The economic viability of our state is directly related to the education of our children.

March 2 is the day for PTA to take over cyberspace and let our voices be heard to protect our future - Texas students!

Help Save Texas School Libraries

Texas school libraries need your help. As part of Texas PTA's effort to educate the whole child, we know how important it is to ensure that all our students have access to quality school library programs.

As you watch the state and local news, you know that many hard budgeting decisions are being made during this challenging time. Unfortunately, many school library programs - programs that have proven and longstanding importance to student education - are being cut. School librarians, who are key in teaching students research, information literacy, and reading, are being asked to cover multiple campuses (leaving school with only part-time school library programs) or are being cut altogether.

We need your action to help save Texas school library programs.

State Level
Please contact your legislators and let them know that school libraries are critical to your child's success.

To send an email to your state representative or state senator, click on Librarians ARE Teachers and scroll down the page for an email form with taking points you can use.(For more information on school libraries, see school libraries and librarians are important.)

· Students need access to quality school library programs and research materials, such as the K-12 Database Program, which has be zeroed out in funding. (Click on K-12 Database Program link above to learn more.)

· Please let legislators know that school librarians ARE teachers. School librarians instruct students every day and work with teachers to help students meet curriculum requirements. Certified librarians hold a master's degree and must have a least two years of classroom teaching experience. Current definitions of instructional staff do not account for the work of our state's school librarians.

Local Level
At the local level, please talk with school board members and administrators about the importance of protecting school library programs and ensuring libraries are staffed with certified school librarians.

Send email and letters to district board members and administrators about the value parents place on strong school library programs.

Thank you for your commitment to a quality education for all children. Parents are the ultimate voice for student success.

Wildcat Walk: New Date! New Location!

Initial response to the Wildcat Walk has been overwhelming! So much so that the PTA has adjusted the date and location to accommodate a larger crowd. Here's the scoop:

When: Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to noon

Where: South Hills High School track

ALL are welcome to attend and walk! Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For a $10 donation, participants will receive a commemorative walk t-shirt and wristband.

Concessions and other fun activities will be part of the event. Fun for the whole family!

All proceeds will go into the fund to purchase a new marquee sign for the school. Hope to see you there!

Volunteers needed for Reading is Fundamental distribution days

You can help South Hills Elementary have fantastic Reading is Fundamental (RIF) distribution days! On Thursday, October 14 and Friday, October 15, each student will be visiting the library to select a brand-new book to take home and keep--courtesy of your PTA.

Volunteers are needed to help put out and pack away books, keep things organized and help students make their selection. One hour shifts are available throughout the school day.

If you can help, please drop by the library and let our wonderful librarian, Ms. Laurie Williams, know that you can lend a hand. Or send an e-mail to southhillspta@gmail.com.

Hey Wildcats! Get your South Hills sweatshirts before cold weather hits. Limited quantities are left. And once they're gone...they're gone! Children's sizes are only $10. Adult sweatshirts are $12. These shirts are in the school uniform colors, so you can wear them any day of the week.

How do I get involved?

Thanks so much to those of you who've already joined PTA. I imagine your next question is: How do I really get involved?

There are several ways you can get involved immediately. And we would be thankful for your support!

1. Encourage your fellow parents/friends to join and submit membership dues
All the money we collect goes back to support the school. I know people hate feeling "nickled and dimed." :) Trust me, I'm one of them! But the more memberships and dues we collect now, the better off we'll be. It'll help us cut back on the amount of fundraising we have to do for the rest of the school year. (And we'll be able to focus on more fun stuff.) The deadline for dues is September 10. Each student whose family returns dues will be entered into a drawing for fantastic prizes--including Texas Rangers tickets. Any help and encouragement you could offer would be deeply appreciated! Our membership chair, Lacee Howard, has worked hard all summer getting great prize donations to reward the kids!

2. Fill out and return the Room Parent volunteer form, if you're interested
If you're specifically interested in serving as a room parent, please make sure to fill out the form that should've come home with your student. Or you can contact the two wonderful ladies spearheading this project: Sandra Camacho, sandra.camacho@fwisd.org and Patricia Zaragoza, patricia.zaragoza@fwisd.org.

3. Attend the September 2 board meeting...or any of the board meetings!
We still have some openings on the board. It requires a committment to attend a monthly board meeting. Once you're officially on the board, your attendence is crucial. We can only conduct business if a majority of board members are present. However, we would appreciate your presence at any and all board meetings. Your input would be welcome. And attending will give you an inside track on projects in the works. Scroll down the right-hand sidebar for a listing of tentative dates for all board and general PTA meetings this year

4. Spread the word!
Join us on our Facebook page if you can. Make sure and tell your fellow parents, too. Our primary goal for this year is to do a better job communicating!

5. Give us your suggestions, thoughts, opinions
What do you want to see the PTA doing? E-mail any questions or suggestions to me personally or the entire board: southhillspta@gmail.com.

South Hills Elementary is looking for Room Parents for 2010-2011 school year. So what is a room parent? A room parent is someone who is a representative for that classroom. They are the primary liaison between the classroom teacher and students’ families. Room Parents initiate and promote the team effort between school and home that is so important at South Hills Elementary. Being a Room parent is a unique opportunity to get to know and to help your child’s teacher in ways that s/he will greatly appreciate. The key to being an effective Room Parent is communication: communication with the teacher to understand his/her needs and communication with parents where you coordinate filling the teacher’s needs. An update from the president

Greetings everyone!

Today is probably going to be spent hurrying about, getting ready for the start of a new school year. I'm so glad that my first grader will be enjoying another year at South Hills Elementary. Our school has such a dedicated staff. I personally feel very blessed to be a part of the Wildcat family.

Now it's time for an honest recollection: Last year I reluctantly joined PTA. I sent in my dues money just to "do the right thing." I didn't know how--or if--my money would make a difference.

I quickly learned that all PTA money is put to good use. I joined the PTA board, and got an inside look at how we support students and staff members. Here are a few of the things we've helped with...

Reading is Fundamental (RIF): A free, brand-new book for EVERY student several times a year. (Over $1,000 is necessary to keep this program going!)

Refreshments and food for school/staff events

Visit from the Fort Worth Zoo, for pre-K and K students

Planners for 5th graders for this school year

None of this is possible without YOUR support. We want to continue these projects and embark on many, many more. Your $6 dues make it happen.

A membership envelope and letter will be coming home with your child soon. I encourage you to look it over and submit your dues.

Whether or not you join PTA, we want to hear from you. What programs would you like PTA take on? How can we better serve the school? How can we improve? Let us know. You can send an e-mail to southhillspta@gmail.com. Or just drop a note in the PTA box located in the office.

Field Day thank yous!!

We're sending a HUGE thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the Field Day Snack Shop and teacher hospitality luncheon a big success...

Becky Rasbeary gets several gold stars for purchasing all the snacks and food, making signs, getting things organized and staying up late to make super-awesome pickle shots that were a big hit among the students. THANK YOU!

Mr. Sides helped everyone keep their cool by providing buckets of ice and a helping hand for several hours. THANK YOU!

Mr. Bowers was extra popular among the faculty and staff. Despite the heat, he continued to stand over a hot grill and cook up amazing hamburgers for the South Hills team. THANK YOU!

And so many more people made this event come together smoothly: Sharla, Lacee, Amanda, Tiffany, Will, Sarah, 5th graders Joey Perez and Jonathan Cervantes...and we KNOW there were others!! That's the great thing about South Hills. Folks will jump right in and lend a hand, no matter what!
