What: Family Literacy Night / Book Fair
Where: South Hills Elementary
Book fair dates: Monday 12/03/12 to Friday 12/07/12 Hours are 7:30 am-3:30 pm
The fair will be open during lunch and after school in the school library.
Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Thursday extended shopping hours for Literacy Night: 7:30 am-7:30 pm

PTA will be raffling a $25 gift certificate for the book fair to one lucky winner!

There will be so many fun games and activities:
Hot cocoa and cookies in the cafeteria
Flashlight Reading
Reader's Theater
Book Walk
Bingo Games
Letters to Santa
And more...!

Every student that attends will receive a free "out of uniform" pass for Friday 12/7/12.

Texas PTA October 2012 Member Message Message From The President It seems so hard to believe that it's October already. But the leaves are changing, and the temperatures are cooler. This brings a wonderful opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the autumn with your families. For many, it was so hot during the summer you couldn't spend much time outdoors. But now that fall has arrived, I hope you take advantage of getting outdoors and enjoying activities such as hiking, biking, walking, or just doing family chores together. When my sons were younger, we tried to get at least one get fall camping trip in before it would get too cold. We also spend at least one weekend, sometimes more, in the backyard cleaning up all the leaves that seem endless. While this may be considered a chore, it usually ends up being a fun and productive time together. And don't forget about fall safety. Layered clothing and staying hydrated are important. And when you're out trick-or-treating or enjoying a fall carnival, be sure to have costumes with reflective tape or light colors, stay together, and supervise everything. Members Connect With Texas PTA! PTA Connection Day A Success!  PTAs throughout Texas were given the opportunity to connect with Texas PTA and PTAs throughout the state on our first ever PTA Connection Day. On September 20th, 1,044 PTAs called, texted, tweeted, posted on Facebook, or emailed their membership numbers. By the end of the evening 266,313 members were reported. An astounding and impressive amount indeed! You've heard the saying, "There is strength in numbers." Our membership (our numbers) is PTA's strength. This strength can be looked at in two ways. First, as fellow members of PTA, we are given the opportunity to work with each other for the benefit of all our children. Networking and collaborating are large parts of being a member of PTA. Connecting with each other enriches our lives and helps make us more productive. It gives us strength, so to speak, individually. Our membership numbers also give us strength collectively. The more members we have, the louder our voice in the legislative arena. When representatives of PTA meet with legislators and decision makers at the state level to voice their concerns, their message carries even more clout when they can say, "On behalf of the ½ million current members of Texas PTA, we want you to address this issue." FWPD Crack Down on School Zone Safety Violations

As thousands of students return to area schools on Monday, the Fort Worth Police Department’s Traffic Division will crack down on school zone safety violations. Officers will target major thoroughfares marked as school zones in the morning and afternoon Monday through Friday.

Enforcement will focus on speeding, passing stopped school buses and illegal cell phone use.
Motorists should use caution, be alert and slow down in school zones and around school buses. It is unlawful to pass a school bus when it is stopped and loading or unloading passengers.


Drivers are prohibited from using a wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle in a school crossing zone unless the vehicle is stopped or the device is used with a hands-free attachment. School zone violations carry stiff penalties. School zone speed limits are 20 mph; the fine for a violation can be as high as $500.

So it's important for kids - and grown-ups - to take a few precautions to prevent accidents. Here are a few recommendations from safety advocates:

Here’s the Law:

• Stop for flashing red lights on a school bus, regardless of which direction you’re headed.
• Continue your trip once the bus has moved, the flashing lights stop flashing or the bus driver signals it’s okay to pass.
• Violations can lead to a $1,000 fine.

 
Safety Tips for Motorists

• Obey the posted speed limit.Fines double in school zones.
• Keep an eye on children gathered at bus stops.
• Watch for children who might dart across the street to catch the bus.

Safety Tips for Students

• Respect your school bus driver and follow these rules:
• Stand far back when you are waiting for the bus.Sit still so the driver can pay attention to the road.
• Look both ways if you have to cross the street after getting off the bus, or wait for the driver to signal it’s safe to cross the street.

Pedestrians

• Yield to vehicles on the roadway if you cross the street at a place other than a marked crosswalk or pedestrian tunnel or crossing. 
• If you’re hit while jaywalking, the driver may not be liable, and his or her auto insurance may not cover your injuries.
• Stay on sidewalks and the right-hand side of crosswalks. 
• Drivers are supposed to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks.
• If the road has no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.

Pedestrian Tips

• Always cross at intersections. Look left, then right, then left again before proceeding.Look for traffic when stepping off a bus or from behind parked cars.
• As a passenger, get in or out of a car on the curb side of the street.
• Make eye contact with drivers before you cross the street.
